Teach the World Foundation

Teaching underprivileged children literacy through the use of tablets.

The Teach the World Foundation was created in the wake of massive flooding in Pakistan in 2010, which displaced millions of its citizens into makeshift settlements outside of the big cities. Education was cut short for the children, and the founders of this group aimed to find a long term, sustainable solution to the general problem of illiteracy.

This was incredible to witness with my own eyes. Groups of children who had probably never held an intricate electronic device before, seamlessly using the tablets and flying through the interface of educational games with complete ease and dedicated focus. Apparently two hours of focused time with these tablets can equal the same amount of education as a whole day in a classroom led by a teacher. It’s an incredibly concentrated use of time that has tremendous effects.

My friend Imran Sayeed is one of the founders and they are doing their best to try and scale up the amount of classrooms around the country. I was lucky enough to be able to visit two of the local classrooms in the outskirts of Karachi. Here is a peak at their working environment as well as the community.
